I meet a lot of people who ask me for the best adjustable dumbbells that they should buy. My answer to them is almost always the same: Look for a handheld weights system that “feels” right whenever you start with your workout.
If pressed on for a more definite answer, I always tell them to try the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells Set. This gym equipment provides a good combination of performance, reliability, and reasonable pricing. Check out my review of the SelectTech 552.
Overview of the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells
The Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells positions itself as a good choice for individuals who seek performance and value in a gym equipment. The dumbbell comes with the same space-saving design that adjustable dumbbells are famous for. Its sturdy construction gives the SelectTech 552 a commercial-grade build quality.
There are 5 metal weight plates on each end of the dumbbell. A locking mechanism secures the plates to the horizontal bar that runs through the centre of the plates. This also serves as the device’s handle. It comes with a textured surface for improved grip. The handle is a little shorter than other systems, though.
Features a fitness tracker app
The SelectTech 552 comes with a minimum weight plate of 2.3 kilogrammes. It also maxes out at 23.8 kilograms. These are for a single dumbbell. Using the pair doubles the weight of the SelectTech 552. There are 15 settings in the adjustable dumbbells set.
One only needs to turn the knob at both ends of the dumbbell. Each turn is equivalent to about 1.1 kilogrammes. This Bowflex creation replaces 15 pairs of conventional dumbbells.
Bowflex also includes an app to help monitor one’s progress in his or her workout. It offers customisation options as well as workout tracking. The app may not be as robust as other fitness tracking apps on the digital market. However, it does provide specificity to the Bowflex system.
The Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells Set provides a good combination of reasonable price and gym-quality performance.
A Closer Look at the Features of the Bowflex SelectTech 552
Wide Weight Range
One of the most important parameters I always look for in an adjustable dumbbell set is the range of its weight capacity. Some of the gadgets on the market max out at 20 kilogrammes.
The SelectTech 552, on the other hand, tops out at 23.8 kilogrammes. This is the maximum weight of each dumbbell. So, if you are going to use the pair, then you are going to work against a force that is equal to 47.6 kilogrammes.
The minimum weight that you can adjust the SelectTech to is 2.3 kilogrammes. I think this is sufficient for those who are only beginning to incorporate strength training exercises in their fitness regimen.
One can always adjust the weight of the dumbbell by turning the dial. You can increase the weight in increments of 1.1 kilogrammes. The set is already equivalent to 15 sets of standard dumbbells.
The wide weight range of the SelectTech 552 gives you the chance to perform a wide range of exercises. I love doing lunges and shrugs using the heaviest setting on the adjustable dumbbell. If my arm muscles start to feel sore, I can always dial it down to a lower weight setting.
I have seen dumbbells made of plastic. These are very popular in fitness classes, especially among women and first-time gym goers. I do not have anything against these dumbbells, except that they are often limited to a maximum of 4.5 kilogrammes. It does not feel right if you want to strength train.
The SelectTech 552 features a durable steel construction. The moulding around the adjustable dumbbell’s metal weight plates allow for quieter workouts. I find the design to be quite useful in ensuring a smoother lift-off.
The handle of the SelectTech is also solid. However, I do think that the gap between the two metal weight plates is quite narrow. If I had bigger hands, it would be almost impossible to grab the handle without brushing against the edges of the plates. This can be a major bummer for people with large hands.
One of the main advantages of adjustable dumbbells is their ability to save you space. The SelectTech 552 comes with 15 adjustment settings. This translates to 15 pairs of dumbbells. You get to save precious floor space for that number of conventional dumbbells.
The cradle that holds the SelectTech 552 when not in use does not require plenty of space either. It only needs about 40 centimetres by 23 centimetres of floor space. This is about the size of a standard shoe box.
Bowflex SelectTech App
There is one feature of the Bowflex SelectTech 552 that I find appealing. This is the SelectTech app. While there is a multitude of fitness tracker apps on mobile platforms, they are not specific to the Bowflex adjustable dumbbells set. I would love to have an app that the manufacturer designed to work with their own products.
The SelectTech app functions like any other fitness tracker. The best part of it is that the app includes trainer lead workouts. You can also build your own workout if you like. There is a journal function in the app, too. It helps you track your progress so you will know which areas you need to improve on.
Pro and Cons
Should You Buy It?
The Bowflex SelectTech 552 is not the perfect adjustable dumbbells set. For me, however, it is a great tool for performing different exercises that will help tone, build, and strengthen the muscles. It has a reasonable price that goes with its durable and reliable construction. Except for a few hiccups in its design, the SelectTech 552 remains a great choice for folks who want a space-saving weightlifting device.
