An itchy scalp and those white flakes are signs that you have this annoying problem with dandruff. While it may embarrass you, it is actually an issue everyone will encounter at least once in their lives.
It happens simply because of oil in your scalp bunching together and turning into flakes. This shedding of dead skin cells is normal, but when you have dandruff, this becomes more extreme. It will double from the normal 487,000 cells per square centimeter to the 800,000 cells per square centimeter.
Causes of Dandruff
Dandruff is triggered by weather channels, dry skin, and by certain hair products or shampoos. However, some people who suffer from skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis will also notice these flakes on their scalp. It may also be due to a yeast-like fungus that is growing on your scalp and feeding on the oils there.
In fact, dandruff is so common that it is easy to find dozens of products aimed at curing it. However, there are also natural remedies you can use at home to solve the same problem.
Natural Remedies for Dandruff
1. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is another compound with tons of anti-fungal properties, which will eliminate the excess fungus and stop your dandruff. Moreover, it is a moisturizer that will relieve your dry skin and prevent dandruff.
Apply a tablespoon of warm coconut oil and apply it directly to your scalp. Massage it into the roots and cover your hair with a shower cap. Leave it for 30 minutes or even overnight. Then rinse off the oil and wash your hair with shampoo.
2. Baking Soda
Baking soda is another common household product that you can actually use against dandruff. Not only is it already in the kitchen, but it is also very effective and natural.
This is because it works by exfoliating the scalp to remove the dead skin before it clumps up and becomes dandruff. It will also remove any excess oil in your scalp and creates a healthy pH balance where the yeast will not grow.
Rinse your hair first with water before mixing 2 tablespoons of baking soda with some drops of water until it forms a paste. You need to massage the mix into your scalp, covering as much of your scalp as possible.
Rinse it out, do not shampoo but apply conditioner. You can use baking soda as replacement for shampoo as much as you want or need, especially when you are having a flare-up.
3. Apple Cider Vinegar
Beyond its other uses, apple cider vinegar is also incredibly effective at controlling dandruff. It works by changing your scalp’s pH. It will make it tough for the yeast and other dandruff-causing fungi.
In a spray bottle, mix the same amount of apple cider vinegar and water. Spritz the solution into your scalp and wrap your hair in a towel. Let it soak for 30 to 45 minutes before shampooing your hair.
4. Olive Oil
Dry skin is the main reason for dandruff, and olive oil will hydrate your scalp and prevent it. This oil is a great moisturizer, so it will relieve any dry and itchy scalp.
It will also cure persistent scaliness and provide nourishment to your skin. Soak your scalp in 3 to 4 tablespoons of olive oil and cover your hair overnight with a shower cap. The next day, shampoo your hair as normal.
5. Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is a popular natural remedy because it is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory. This is also what makes it a perfect remedy for dandruff. Moreover, it is rich in terpenes, which are great at blocking bacteria and can treat a long list of conditions like acne and skin fungus.
To make the solution, add a few drops of tea tree oil to your shampoo. You can also add it to other kinds of oil such as olive oil or coconut oil. When done with the mixture, gently massage the oils into your scalp. Leave for a few minutes and rinse.
These natural remedies can also be mixed together to create your own anti-dandruff solution. Just continue using these ingredients to say goodbye to dandruff for the rest of your life.
