Headaches can happen any time of the day. Sometimes, they happen so randomly that you don’t know what triggered it. Headaches can range from a mild one to a very painful one that makes you cry. If you’ve experienced a really painful headache, then that would be a migraine.
Migraines are a certain kind of headache where only a part of your head hurts. It is characterized by a throbbing or a pulsing feeling on the head. According to doctors, a migraine is often experienced by adults above 30 years old.
There are many triggers to a headache. Most of the time, it can be as random as the weather. If you frequently have headaches, then it would be helpful to have a diary to track them. By having a journal on it, you will be able to know which are your possible triggers. These triggers differ per person.
Ways You Can Prevent Headaches
Although your doctor will always be there to give you medicine for your headaches, it’s still best to avoid things like these. After all, prevention is always better than cure. So if you have headaches, here are a few things you can do to lessen their occurrence.
1. Drink lots of water.
One of the main causes of headaches is dehydration. This is because your brain lacks the oxygen it needs to function well. So, when you have a headache, try to drink two glasses of water to supply more oxygen. Also, make it a point to drink at least 8 glasses of water throughout the day.
2. Don’t let yourself go hungry.
Aside from lack of water (and oxygen), one of the causes of a headache is the lack of food. If you’re acidic, you have probably experienced getting a headache when you skip a meal. This is because your body already lacks nutrients.
It can also mean that the acid in your stomach has gone up to your head. To avoid this, make sure that you never skip a meal. If you easily get hungry, add snacks in between meals.
3. Avoid lights that are too bright or too dark.
Lighting is a popular trigger for headaches. When you are working under a very bright light in a dark room, this can strain your eyes. Likewise, if your screen is too dark and you’re working in a bright room, then this will also give your eyes a difficult time to adjust.
When reading, writing, or doing anything on the screen, it’s best to be in a well-lit area. If you’re in a dimly lit room, it’s best to not put your screen’s brightness into full blast. This will just strain your eyes even more.
4. Get enough sleep.
Rest is one of the most underrated secrets to preventing a headache. A lot of people believe that headaches only happen when you lack nutrients in the body. However, it is proven that lack of proper sleep also gives you a headache.
Ideally, you should get 8 hours of sleep every night. If this is not possible, find ways on how you can still feel well-rested even if you have a busy day.
5. Practice proper posture.
According to chiropractors, bad posture can cause headaches. This is because the flow of blood becomes more difficult if you are always slouching.
Moreover, if your neck is always bent forward, then it would be harder to supply oxygen to the brain. And it’s not just the oxygen supply that’s the problem. Bad posture can also strain your neck which is connected to your brain.
6. Learn how to manage stress.
Lastly, you also have to learn how to manage stress. Stress can also trigger a headache just like how it triggers other illnesses. It can make your heart rate go up which can use up your oxygen supply.
Moreover, stress can also make you feel fatigued which leads to an exhausted brain. So if you are always in a stressful environment, make sure to give yourself time to rest a few times a day. It would also help to find an outlet for stress.
Depending on the person, causes of a headache can change. Once you know which triggers it, you can better prevent more headaches in the future. It might not avoid all headaches, but it will definitely lessen the days that you are unable to work.
