What is wellness? Is it the same as being healthy? While these two terms are easily interchangeable, they mean different things. Health pertains to well-being which includes physical, mental, and social.

Wellness, on the other hand, describes a state of being healthy. It’s the practice of doing healthy habits that enrich a person’s physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health.

What’s the Importance of Wellness?

A lot of people know that wellness is important in their lives, but why? Here are some reasons why it should be a part of your everyday life.

1. Better Capability to Do Things

When you are in a state of wellness, you are able to do more things. Aside from the fact that your body will be capable of locomotor activities, you will also have the energy and the drive to finish tasks.

For example, when you are in your best health, you can go to a place without struggling to move or needing to rest after a few minutes outside.

2. Healthier Relationships

People who focus on their wellness take conscious efforts to be in healthy relationships. This is because they recognise that the people they surround themselves with affect how they approach the world.

Needless to say, those who exercise their intellectual and occupational wellness, will always strive to look for and build relationships that will not damage their wellness.

3. Peace of Mind

Peace of mind is something a lot of people shrug off simply because it doesn’t have a direct benefit to one’s career and finances. However, peace of mind can give you more benefits than what is obvious. For example, having peace of mind will allow you to focus on your career. That way, you excel more.

To add to that, peace of mind can help improve your physical health. This is because you will be less stressed about other things that happen around you. When there is less stress, your body will be able to function in its best condition.

Types of Wellness

Since wellness tackles the whole mind and body, it comes in different types. Here are all the types of wellness and some of their examples.

1. Physical Wellness

The most common type of wellness is physical. This pertains to your nutrition, exercise, and other physical dimensions. It includes various types of physical activities that affect your nutrition and fitness.

When you focus on physical wellness, it means that you take the time to exercise several times a week and you also eat a healthy diet. Each person has their own way of staying physically healthy and most of these ways vary depending on the lifestyle, body type, and health conditions of a person.

2. Spiritual Wellness

Spiritual wellness refers to a person’s belief system and values. This includes religion, morality, and sense of purpose.

For some people, spiritual wellness is often overlooked because they associate it with religion. While religion is part of spirituality, it’s not the only source of a person’s values and views. Other people’s beliefs can come from science or experience.

3. Intellectual Wellness

Intellectual wellness or mental wellness refers to the habits that exercise your brain. There are many ways to exercise intellectual wellness in the same way that there are many ways for a person to learn.

Some learn and exercise their brain by reading while some learn better when they do brain exercises. Making a commitment to always be curious is one step to exercising your intellectual wellness.

4. Occupational Wellness

Occupational wellness refers to activities that give you a sense of purpose. It’s similar to spiritual wellness, but this focuses more on finding meaning than values and religion. You can easily say that occupation wellness involves your career and the other activities that you participate in.

Final Thoughts

Wellness is very important if you want to live a full and happy life. While there are so many aspects of wellness, you don’t necessarily have to achieve all of them at the same time.

Your own path to wellness will vary depending on your circumstances and choices, but it is important to always make an effort to achieve it. By actively pursuing wellness, you are able to create a healthy life that allows you to be your best self.
