What is Black Friday?
The Black Friday tradition started in the United States. It happens annually every last Friday of November, right after Thanksgiving Day.
Similar to Boxing Day, offline and online retailers offer massive bargains during this event. And so, people eagerly look forward to it for their Christmas shopping.
But why call it Black Friday? Well, people started using this phrase in 1951. Back then, Black Friday was when workers would call in sick after Thanksgiving Day to get another day off.
Some also believe that the term has a connection with money and accounting. You see, accountants often use black ink to write down profits, which is significantly high during Black Friday.
Is Black Friday big in Australia?
Black Friday used to be a single-day event in Australia when it started back in 2015. Over the years, the event became so popular that several Aussie retailers began joining in with better offers and discounts.
The momentum probably has something to do with the growing competition among businesses as well. Retail giants would even entice shoppers with early deals or exclusive discounts that lasted days after Black Friday.
It has been this way since 2019, so it will not be surprising to see a similar, if not a better, trend for Black Friday 2021 Australia. The pandemic last 2020 did not dampen our love for shopping and bargains either.
The Australia Bureau of Statistics (ABS) even showed that retail turnover in November 2020 was higher by 13.2% than the similar period last year. Victoria led the rise in trade, mainly due to household purchases, Black Friday sales and new electronic product releases.
With pandemic restrictions gradually easing up, we can expect this shopping behaviour in Australia to stay and perhaps even surpass last year’s figures.
When is Black Friday 2021 in Australia?
Since its introduction in Australia, Black Friday has been a welcome annual event among retailers and shoppers. And this year, Black Friday 2021 Australia falls on the 26th of November.
While the sales bonanza lasts for only 24 hours, there are plenty of early deals to expect leading up to Black Friday. Expect aftermath offers for the sale period as well. Plus, there’s Cyber Monday happening on the 29th of November with a wide variety of new deals!
Is Black Friday better than Cyber Monday?
Savvy shoppers and bargain hunters used to go to physical stores on Black Friday, then reserve Cyber Monday for online deals. Moreover, traditional Black Friday was all about tech deals and discounts on big-ticket items, while Cyber Monday was for lifestyle goods.
But now, there’s no significant difference between the two sale dates. All discounted items are available in both brick-and-mortar and online stores.
However, keep in mind that some local and international retailers prefer to reserve the deepest discounts on the last day. You can always opt to wait for the best deals. But if it’s a popular item, I suggest buying it right then and there.
How does Black Friday work?
Come Black Friday shopping season, expect retailers to offer all sorts of attractive deals before and after the event. Most of them will give away promo codes for you to enter at checkout. At times, deep discounts will run for a limited time or until stocks last.
Major retailers like Amazon and eBay will likely provide a store membership option for their customers as well. While membership is not usually required for you to shop, members get access to things like exclusive offers, freebies or faster shipping.
So, if you are a patron of specific retailers, it’s best to visit their stores or websites and check their plans for Black Friday 2021 Australia. Then consider what works for you. And if you prefer making purchases online, make sure to have your credit card and payment details ready for shopping.
Is Black Friday online shopping safe?
Ample consumer rights and protection legislations cover Aussie shoppers, and these include including online shopping. So, you can rest assured that your Black Friday experience will be safe and smooth-sailing.
However, any huge sale event can give rise to scammers, phishing sites and unofficial emails or links. Make sure to stay on high alert for these kinds of modus.
Be wary of offers that ask for personal information or credit card details. And if you are shopping through your computer, update your security software or install one that can block known scammers or scam sites.
Which stores offer Black Friday sales?
Nearly every retailer will have something for Black Friday. It’s the biggest sales event near Christmas time, after all! So, expect to make huge savings from big names like eBay Australia, Target, Dell, Lenovo, JB Hi-Fi, Myer, The Good Guys and Bing Lee.
Amazon Australia Black Friday is undoubtedly the shoppers’ favourite. Aside from items with the lowest prices, Amazon has something on discount from a massive range of products. It’s the perfect one-stop-shop if you are after affordable options on toys, kitchen appliances, fashion or tech items.
