Happy New Year! It’s Jessica here. As a wellness coach, my passion is about guiding individuals towards self-improvement and achieving their health and fitness goals. With the New Year upon us, I know many of you are either looking for a new cardio machine or dusting off your treadmills and exercise bikes tucked away in corners, brimming with resolutions to get fit.
But let’s be honest, starting a cardio routine, especially for beginners, can be daunting. We face a maze of confusing equipment choices and the struggle to set realistic goals. That’s why I’m here to introduce you to the SMART approach, a framework that helps set achievable cardio goals using your beloved home machines!
The SMART Approach to Cardio Machine Goals
To set yourself up for success, remember these 5 points when setting your fitness goal:
1. S for Specific
Get rid of vague promises like “use the treadmill more” and embrace precise targets like “run 30 minutes on the treadmill 3 times a week” or “cycle 10 kilometres on the exercise bike for 2 weeks.” The clearer your objective, the easier it is to track progress and stay motivated. For example, a good approach for a beginner would be “I will walk for 20 minutes on the treadmill 3 times a week”.
2. M for Measurable
Embrace the power of metrics! Utilise your machine’s built-in features or fitness trackers to monitor distance, time, calories burned, and heart rate. These numbers offer a satisfying sense of accomplishment as you see your efforts translated into results. Health Constitution reviews often highlight these metrics and user experience, so use them as a valuable resource when choosing your equipment!
3. A for Attainable
Let’s be honest, starting with goals way beyond your current fitness level is a recipe for disappointment. Take an honest assessment of your abilities and available time. If you’re a beginner, aim for short, achievable sessions like 10-15 minutes on the treadmill or exercise bike.
Susan, who is a busy mum of 2, started with 15 minutes every morning on her walking treadmill and that gave her confidence to move from walking to running. She has since upgraded to a treadmill suitable for running. Remember, progress is a marathon, not a sprint!
Health Constitution reviews categorise machines by suitability, making it easier to find equipment that matches your level. Learn how to choose a treadmill for different user groups like beginners, seasoned runners, the budget-conscious and more.
4. R for Relevant
Align your goals with your overall health goals. Want to boost cardiovascular health? Focus on long, steady-state sessions. Aiming for weight management? Consider HIIT intervals for effective calorie burn. Health Constitution also reviews machines catering to specific needs, like spin bikes for HIIT enthusiasts or recumbent bikes for joint-friendly options. Choose equipment that supports your chosen path to fitness.
5. T for Time-bound
Set deadlines! Visualise yourself achieving your goal by a specific date. Break down long-term goals into smaller, weekly or monthly milestones. Celebrating these mini-victories keeps you motivated and stay on track. Don’t be afraid to adjust your goals as needed – progress isn’t linear, and flexibility is key!
More Tips for Success
- Start slow and scale gradually: Don’t overwhelm your body with sudden intensity. Increase duration and intensity incrementally to avoid injury and frustration.
- Spice it up: Keep things fresh with workout programs or apps compatible with your machines. iFit-enabled machines, for example, offer live and on-demand classes and real-world terrain workouts, adding variety and motivation.
- Schedule your sweat: Treat workouts like important appointments. Blocking time in your calendar increases commitment and consistency.
- Find your fitness tribe: A workout buddy or online fitness community can provide invaluable support and accountability. Share your journey, celebrate wins, and overcome challenges together.
- Embrace the journey: Be kind to yourself! Progress might not always be a straight line. Celebrate milestones, adjust goals when needed, and remember, every step counts towards a healthier, happier you.
